‘What is Get Fit Avoid Falls’?   back to top

The Get Fit Avoid Falls Project is an interagency programme including health and local government.

The programme caters for people over the age of 60 years who have fallen or at risk of falling, because of poor mobility and or strength, lack of confidence and have balance problems.

Aim of the programme   back to top

The aim of the project is to bring a falls prevention programme to the local community and help those people at risk of falling, by improving quality of life by reducing the fear of falling, increasing activity levels and reducing isolation.

It is a 12 week programme with exercises to improve balance, strength and mobility, followed by educational workshops. It aims to increase knowledge of falls prevention including how to recover from a fall, home safety and community services.

Maintenance of and developing the gains made during the GFAF Level 1 course is the objective of the level 2 programme. This runs for up to 36 weeks and may include members of the community who have not attended level 1 but are assessed as appropriate for Level 2.
