Preventing falls some hints and tips

Many falls can be prevented if you are aware of the risks and can manage changes to your environment and lifestyle.

Risk factors can be medical, environmental, social or related to mobility problems.

Below is a list of risk factors. Click on the title for advice on how to reduce them

Danger Signs      
An unexplained trip or fall in the last year
Affected by Stroke, Parkinson's Disease, Dementia, Coronary Heart Disease, Osteoporosis or Arthritis
Experience of light headedness, dizzy spells or low blood pressure
Taking regular medication or more than four medications a day
Poor sight
Bladder/bowel problems
Problems with sleeping
Low mood or depressed
Poor diet
Alcohol intake
Difficulty with walking or getting up from a low chair/toilet
Poor balance – need to use a stick or to hold onto things to keep your balance
Problems carrying things
Live alone or spouse/partner unable to provide support
Unsuitable footwear and clothing
Cold house or poorly lit
Home / stairs cluttered
Loose mats/rugs or trailing cables
Worn or torn floor/stair covering or slippery surfaces
Steep steps or no stair rail
