What to do if you've had a fall
– some simple steps

Nothing can fully prevent you from having an accidental fall. It is vital that you are prepared for the event and practice what to do if it happens.

If you have fallen, it is very important to stay calm and focus on either trying to get up or getting help. Try not to panic! Do not try and get up immediately, catch your breath first and assess the situation.

If you can get up follow these 6 simple steps:

1. Ease yourself onto your elbows
2. Move onto your hands and knees
3. Hold onto a firm surface to support you (preferably a chair)
4. Facing the surface (or chair) ease yourself to a standing position.
5. Turn yourself gently and if the firm surface can be sat on, sit down.
6. Tell your GP or health professional about your fall

If you can’t get up follow these 5 simple steps:

  1. Can you attract attention?

    · Shout and bang something
    · Press your pendant alarm
    · Use the telephone if you can reach it

  2. Can you get comfortable?

    · Find a near by pillow/cushion/rolled up item of clothing to put under your head

  3. Can you keep warm?

    · Cover yourself with clothing/tablecloth/rug

  4. Can you keep moving?

    · Move position to avoid getting pressure sores
    · Move joints to avoid stiffness and help circulation
    · Roll away from a damp area if your bladder ‘lets go’
