Medication Information
for Health Care Professionals

Medication that may lead to falls include:

Hypoglycaemic and Opiates
Anti-hypertensives
Corticosteroids
Psychoactives

The elderly are particularly vulnerable to the effects of medication and are also particularly likely to be taking multiple medication. More than three-quarters of people over 75 years old take more than 4 different medications which is itself an independent risk factor for falling. In the care home setting this rises even higher to more than six drugs per day.
