National Falls Awareness Day - 26th June 2007

The third National Falls Awareness Day takes place on the 26th June 2007 and aims to raise awareness of the risk of falling as we age, the conditions that increase the chances of a fall and the practical changes that can reduce the risk.

The day, developed by the Preventing Falls Programme at Help the Aged, provides an opportunity for older people, local practitioners and other organisations to highlight the good work going on in falls prevention.

The aim of the day is to focus on positive activities and events which can be done now to lay the groundwork for a healthy older age tomorrow. This year’s theme – "Getting Out and About" encourages older people to identify opportunities in their environment to take part in physical activity (essential for healthy ageing) and to be aware of the potential hazards presented in their environment, inside and outside the home, that can increase the risk of falling.

For further information regarding Preventing Falls Programme at Help the Aged visit their website.

Locally there will be 2 main events across Bucks on Falls Awareness Day.

There will be:

In Friars Square, Aylesbury 10 - 3.30pm an information display, specialist staff to answer your questions, a Sloppy Slipper exchange for older people, a walking stick "MOT" and a Tai Chi demonstration at 1.15pm.

In the Octagon, High Wycombe, there will be a similar event but the Tai Chi demonstration will take place at 11am.

A new leaflet is now available ‘Living well – safely at home’ for older people, their families, friends and carers. Click here to download it.

This website has been expanded and updated; have a good look around it!
